Step-by-step setup
Check what your region's store actually stocks
Open the LG Content Store, move to Apps, search. The catalogue differs by country and webOS version, so the practical question is not which player is best but which one exists for you. IPTV Smarters Player is the most widely stocked. Older webOS searches slowly enough that people abandon it a second too soon.
Recognise the impostors
Listings named TiviMato, Tivimax and similar appear on LG stores regularly. They are unrelated products trading on the resemblance and some of them charge for the privilege. TiViMate has never had a webOS build and none is coming. Anybody in the house who wants it needs a stick, not a store search.
Install, then stop and fetch your phone
Do not start typing yet. The Magic Remote's pointer makes character entry slow and errors invisible, and a mistyped server address produces a message that helps nobody. Open the activation thread on a phone and hold it while you work through the fields.
Enter the account by whichever route applies
Smarters wants Login with Xtream Codes API and the three values. Smart IPTV has no login screen and shows a MAC address instead, which you pair with your M3U at siptv.app/mylist from the phone you are already holding. Knowing which app you installed saves a genuinely baffling quarter of an hour.
Restart, then learn the coloured buttons
The line-up and guide appear on the second launch. The coloured keys along the LG remote drive favourites and the EPG, and they are what makes these televisions pleasant rather than merely workable for this. Five minutes learning which is which repays itself every evening afterwards.
Decide about the guide before you decide about the service
webOS players differ considerably in how well they render a programme guide across thousands of channels, and on an older LG the guide is where the set will feel slow if it is going to. Open it, scroll a few hours ahead, and see whether it is pleasant. If it is not, that is a limitation of this television rather than of the account, and a thirty-dollar Android stick removes it entirely.
Handle the black screen before it happens
A black picture with working audio is the single commonest report on webOS, and it is a decoder mismatch rather than a dead channel. Switch the player to native or hardware decoding now, pre-emptively. It is two taps and it has cost people entire evenings.
Trim the list to this room, and pick a quality
Hide what nobody here watches and build a favourites group of thirty or forty. Then decide whether this set takes 4K or HD — main television or secondary. On a busy evening that single choice does more for the household than anything else in these instructions.
Common errors and fixes
Black screen, audio continues
Decoder mismatch. Native or hardware decoding in the app settings. Where exactly one channel misbehaves and the rest are fine, switch that channel to its lower-bitrate twin instead of changing the global setting — the twin exists beside most sports feeds for this reason.
It opens then closes immediately
Almost always a webOS version too old for the current build of the app. Look for a television firmware update first. If the set is already current, install a different player rather than fighting this one; they vary in presentation, not in capability.
The pointer makes it unusable
Press the wheel on the Magic Remote to switch between pointer and directional modes. These players are built around a directional pad and behave oddly under a floating cursor — which reads exactly like broken software when it is simply the wrong input method.
It stopped after the television updated
LG firmware updates can clear app data. Smarters needs the three values again; Smart IPTV needs its playlist re-sent to the same MAC. Neither affects your subscription. This is the argument for keeping credentials outside a chat thread, and it is worth two minutes today.

LG Smart TV IPTV FAQ
Can TiViMate be made to work here?
No, and no amount of searching changes it. TiViMate is Android software; webOS runs none of it. If the guide is what somebody in your house cares about, a thirty-dollar Android stick on a spare socket gives them exactly that while the television carries on doing everything else.
Which of the two players, then?
Smarters first, because it costs nothing, takes the login directly and carries a full guide. Smart IPTV if this set is old enough to struggle with Smarters, accepting a one-off fee per television. Try free before paying anybody, particularly if several rooms are involved.
Will it slow the set down?
The app is small; what taxes an older LG is drawing a guide across thousands of channels. That is exactly why trimming matters. A television that feels sluggish on the full list usually feels fine once two thirds of it is hidden.
One account across several LGs?
As many as you own. Installations are unlimited and only simultaneous playback is capped, so both sets can sit signed in while one plays. Two rooms wanting different things at the same hour is precisely the situation the higher tiers exist for.
Which LG models genuinely work?
webOS 3.0 and later, which in practice means 2016 onwards. Sets from 2014 and 2015 either lack the apps in their store or run versions too old to install current builds. On those, an external stick is the only sensible answer and it will give you a better player than the television ever offered.
How old is too old for an LG?
webOS 3.0 is the floor, which means model year 2016. Below that the store either no longer exists or no longer carries anything relevant, and LG stopped supporting those sets years ago. It is not worth an afternoon of trying: a stick costs thirty dollars and gives that television a better player than it ever shipped with.
Does the app update itself?
Through the LG Content Store, yes, in the background like anything else on the set. What it will not do is survive a factory reset or, occasionally, a major firmware update — both of which clear app data. That is an inconvenience of a minute if your credentials are somewhere findable and an evening if they are not.
