Step-by-step setup
Do a phone first, deliberately
Not because the phone matters most, but because it is the only Apple device where every field can be pasted. Five minutes there proves the account works. Anything that goes wrong on the television afterwards is then a problem with the television, rather than a puzzle with two possible causes and no way to tell them apart.
Choose from what Apple actually allows
IPTV Smarters Player, iPlayTV or GSE Smart IPTV. Smarters is free and sufficient; the others are paid and more pleasant. Names resembling TiViMate surface on the App Store periodically and are unrelated products — TiViMate is Android software and has never had an Apple build.
Sign in with the Xtream option
Every one of them words it slightly differently and all want the same three values. The address takes http:// at the front and the port at the end. On iOS a pasted value very often arrives with a trailing space attached, so when a login is refused that is the first thing to eliminate.
Do every phone and tablet in the house
This is the step people skip and it is the one with the most household value. An installed screen costs nothing until it plays; a phone with the app already on it is a solved argument at nine o'clock. Two minutes each, and by the third you will know the credentials by heart.
Set the screens up in the right order
Configure the iPhone first, then the iPad, then the Apple TV, reusing the same three values each time. Nothing syncs between them, so each is a fresh entry, but by the third you will have the credentials memorised and it takes under two minutes. Leaving a device out saves nothing — it only means that when somebody wants it, they cannot have it.
Then the Apple TV, with help
Nothing syncs between Apple devices for this, so the television is configured from scratch. When it asks for text, a keyboard prompt appears on the lock screen of any nearby iPhone — use it. Typing a password with the tvOS remote produces most of the errors reported from this platform and is a miserable way to spend ten minutes.
Change the engine when a channel refuses
Some feeds use formats the default engine declines. VLC or FFmpeg in the app's settings fixes nearly all of them. Try this before deciding a channel is absent, because from the sofa a channel that will not decode and a channel that does not exist look precisely the same.
Test where the household actually watches
A channel running flawlessly on an iPhone over 5G proves nothing about a Saturday evening in the living room. Move to the television, on your own wifi, at the hour you normally watch, with the other screens doing whatever they normally do. That is the only test that answers the question you are asking.
Common errors and fixes
Channels list loads, nothing plays
Decoding rather than account. Switch the engine to VLC or FFmpeg. If a single channel misbehaves while the rest are fine, that feed's encoding is the cause and its HD or SD counterpart will almost always play without argument.
The address is rejected repeatedly
Type all of it by hand once, including protocol and port. Pasting on iOS attaches invisible whitespace more often than anyone believes and no player will show you that character. A carefully typed entry that is still refused is the point at which asking us about the line becomes worthwhile.
Works on the phone, not on the Apple TV
Since the phone has already proved the account, the difference is on the television — nearly always a mistyped character. Use the iPhone keyboard prompt rather than the on-screen one. Failing that, confirm both devices are on the same network before suspecting anything else.
A forgotten phone kept knocking out the television
Paused is not always stopped. Phones are the usual explanation when a household hits its tier unexpectedly, because an app left in the background can hold a stream open. Close it properly on any device nobody is actually watching.

Does an idle phone use up a screen?
Only while something is playing. Signed in and idle costs nothing at all, which is exactly why we suggest installing on every device rather than rationing them. The screen is then there the moment somebody wants it, and invisible the rest of the time.
Is Smarters genuinely on Apple TV?
Yes, on the tvOS store, free, with the Xtream login, the guide and the on-demand sections. It is a proper application rather than a workaround, and for most households it is all the Apple TV requires.
What about a Mac?
Three routes — the Smarters desktop app, the M3U link in VLC or IINA, or the browser player which installs nothing. The Windows and Mac guide covers each. For checking whether a channel exists before touching a television, the browser is fastest on any computer.
Can we download things for a journey?
No, and it is a real difference from the platforms you may be weighing this against. Live television is live and the catalogue streams rather than downloads. If offline viewing on a commute genuinely gets used in your house, that is a fair reason to keep whichever subscription provides it.
Does it work with AirPlay?
Yes, from an iPhone or iPad to an Apple TV or AirPlay television, and it is genuinely useful for showing somebody something. As a permanent arrangement it is poor: the phone is occupied for as long as you watch, the battery drains, and any notification interrupts the picture. Install the app on the Apple TV itself and keep AirPlay for what it is good at.
Is the Apple TV a good main screen for this?
Fast, excellent picture, stable app — yes on every count except choice of player. What you give up against Android hardware is TiViMate and its guide, which for the sport watcher in a household is a genuine loss. If most of your viewing is on demand with the occasional live channel, the Apple TV you already own is entirely sufficient and there is nothing to buy.
